Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honors and mourns the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. ¹ It is observed on the last Monday of May, which this year falls on May 29th.
Memorial Day has its origins in the aftermath of the Civil War, when various towns and cities began holding springtime tributes to the fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and flags. In 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance on May 30th, which he named Decoration Day. The first official observance of Decoration Day took place at Arlington National Cemetery, where General James Garfield made a speech, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of 20,000 Civil War soldiers.
Over time, Decoration Day became known as Memorial Day and was extended to honor all those who have died in any war or military action. In 1971, Congress established Memorial Day as a federal holiday and moved its observance to the last Monday in May.
Today, many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Some also observe a national moment of remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time. Many volunteers place American flags on the graves of military personnel in national cemeteries.
